Last trip of the year!

Hit the road last week in what will likely be the last long trip out of the area for the rest of the year ... at least until the sun comes back out next spring! It was my youngest son's birthday, so a great excuse to do some exploring. There are some amazing sights to see along the way and I met some really great people too.

This trip took 5WB from Anacortes 74S to South Valley Regional U42 near SLC to pick up Mike, to Rifle Co RIL to see family, then on to Leadville/Lake County Co LXV, then to 1L8 at the entrance to Zion to visit some friends (I'll let you look up the great name of that airport!) back to U42 and then home. All in all 16+ hours off the ground and 11 landings over 6 days.

LXV of course holds the record for highest airport in North America at 9934', so I had to do that, and Matt at the ops office is happy to print a certificate to celebrate your achievement. A lot to learn for a flat lander up that high!

The flight from RIL to 1L8 crossed over 4 or 5 of the most beautiful NP areas in the west. I really enjoyed the visit to Zion National park and took advantage of the chance to do some climbing and canyoneering through the Pine Creek area.

The weather could not have been better, the beer colder, the people friendlier or the adventures greater! Enjoy the pics. Fly on!

Great trip! Great photos!

As much as I'm fond of Leadville, there is at least one landing strip that is higher. It's Coyote Flat, former Army Air Corps high altitude training base, 9988' MSL, located in the Sierra Nevada. My son has landed our Pacer there. It might be suitable for an RV-15.
