instrument space

Herb T

I'm New Here
I am building a 9A and getting around to thinking about avionics/radios etc.
There is only 8 1/2 inches between the instrument panel and the center sub panels 7105A andB. This is not enough depth for a Garmin 530 for example or a standard radio.
will it be required to cut holes in the sub panels?

Most folks cut a hole in the bulkhead. Then you beef up the perimiter with aluminum angle.

Thanks Tracy
I guess there is no other way.
The need for doing this is actually a benefit.
Radios should not be cantilever mounted off of just the instrument panel.
The trays should be supported at some point further forward.
With them needing to penetrate the sub panel bulkhead that opening can be appropriately positioned so that light aluminum angle can be attached vertically on each side of the opening, and then the forward ends of any radio trays anchored to the flanges on those angles. You then have a very solidly supported radio stack.
