Default One Hot Airplane! Piranha Only one left flying

I'd like to share a few pictures of a VERY SPECIAL airplane that a friend of mine has as it is the only one flying in the world. For SALE?? NO NO NO.

Built in 1966 by American Electric. It was designed to carry one 500 lbs bomb and 8 rockets for Vietnam war.
This airplane was the first one built as a prototype and the military never owned it so it was not destroyed. Only 6 other Piranhas were built. One crashed in a spin test and the other 5 were destroyed by the military as the airplanes were very difficult to fly and for other reasons. The Piranha is tested for 16+- G's. Empty weight as of today stripped of bombs and rockets weighs 900 lbs. empty, no fuel, pilot etc.
Fuel capacity is 60 gals.

No this is not a misprint, but the Gross weight is 3,200 lbs. !!!!! This will tell you how strongly built this airplane is. Stall speed is 130mph full of 60 gals of fuel, plus pilot and 30 lbs of baggage. Light on fuel the stall speed is 120. NO Flaps either. Touch down speed is around the 125 mph range which needs plenty of runway to land. Flying pattern on final, the Piranha has to be slipped in as you cannot see the runway because of the very long nose and pilot sitting so far back. VNE is 399MPH. Top speed is disclosed, but it is fast. Engine is a Lycoming 180HP+++++ fuel injected with high comp pistons. Prop has an 8" extension swinging a ??? prop. BTW my friend that owns this has over 35,000++++ flying hours and none of this is airline time. This will tell you how good he is and I use him at each Bianual. One tricky bird to fly is all I can say and always a pleasure to see at our monthly EAA flyins. Were both members of EAA Chapter 377 as there are other pictures on our web site. http://www.eaa377.org/ If anyone would like to see this one of none Piranhas, check out our website for our monthly fly-in schedule as anyone is wellcome and you can personally see this airplane. Contact me if interested and I can tell you which fly-ins this airplane will be at. Anyway, just wanted to share this with any interested folks. Pictures taken today at our monthly EAA fly-in at Dodge City, KS Thanks AJ
PS: this Piranha does have RV wheel pants on it as of last year, so can we call it an RV???????? Kinda...LOL..

Default VANS Lower Cowl Mod

I forgot to mention that the lower cowl has a VANS fiberglass air inlet MOD for the fuel injection along with the VANS wheel pants. Hmmmm..... OK 1.5% RV maybe.

Believe it or not, Van used to give you a tail wheel pant when you made your first flight. But that was many moons ago.

A.J.,
I hope you and Bud will think about attending the Gage, Ok Fly-in again on Memorial day. Both of you guys have awesome birds. Next time you see Bud tell him Chapter 1115 really appreciates what he's done for us. Especially his invitation only private airshow the day before the fly-in. What a treat!
(I'm the guy who was always droning around in the red and white Cherokee hauling Young Eagles. I'm building a -7 right down the road from you in WW).

Default Piranha Sighting

I had the pleasure of seeing this hot-rod in action about a year ago at a fly-in at F14 in Wichita Falls, Tx. When he left, he did a low pass for us, and he was MOVIN!!!

Thanks A.J. for sharing!

I saw this plane and talked to the owner a few years back when he brought it out to a fly-in that our (now defunct) local EAA chapter put on. What a wild machine. The other thing I remember about it is that it's TINY! It looked like the pilot's eyes would barely be above the cockpit rail.

The owner was a really neat guy too.
