What’s the RV-4 market looking like these days?

Hey all,

An RV has always held an appeal to me and I’m currently looking to move up from what I’m flying now, and a -4 is on my short list. About what would it take to get into a flying basic VFR -4? Are there common issues to be aware of at that end of the market?

What’s the insurance market looking like on these? (I’m aware of across the board increases).

As economics are always a factor, consider this some market research to narrow down what plane I end up pursuing.

Thanks!

Looks like they are in the 45-50k range for your basic RV-4. I had low time tailwheel and Falcon insurance was $1800 back in 2016.

This is what I've found watching the market since ~2013, figures in USD.

30-40: Basic VFR, maybe IFR, no frills.
40-50: some glass, IFR capable, probably constant speed prop/Catto
50-60: Glass, great paint, all the QoL mods
60-70+: Pristine show plane

If you’re looking for a sport plane that gives you more pure enjoyment per dollar than any other, you are looking for an RV4. My RV4 is my 5th RV - RV6, RV8, RV4, RV8, and now my last one - another RV4. My insurance (full coverage) for my $40K RV4 is $840/year.
