Landing light placement

Why do we place the landing (and taxi) light in the outermost wing bay or wingtip?

Mounting it in the bay next to the fuel tank would give a shorter wire run.

Is it because it would weaken the needed strength of the LE skin at that point?

Probably for the same reason a mocking bird walks around with his wings spread- to look as big as possible. Most of the reason for landing lights is to be seen. ;)
