First inspection - Canada

Question to all the other Canadians out there: when should I plan on having my first inspection done by MD-RA?

Inspection

Hey,

1st inpection is when the wings and tail are done (all the flying surfaces).. but not closed up.

Get the first inspection done near the end of the tail kit. Talk to your inspector (it will almost certainly be Tim Parsons from Kingston) before you get too far into things to be sure you understand what he expects. He needs to be able to see inside each of the tail surfaces, so you need to leave some rivets undone so that he can peel back the skin to look inside. Discuss the details with him.

It depends on your comfort with your building skill. When we started the RV7-A we welcomed the input from our inspector after the empennage was done. If you're ok with your work then you can try and also complete the wings for inspection. This will save you one inspection and allow to complete the aircraft before you need to have the inspector back for your final inspection.

Phil, just make sure that the inspector can see all of the shop heads on your rivets. This may mean leaving a skin unriveted if there are no inspection plates, or in some cases, not riveting a aft spar in place (HS).

If possible, wait until you've done as much as you can before inspection... it will save some money. Nevertheless, if you want to button everything up and store the assemblies, you can inspect as you go. Sometimes the inspector won't charge any extra if he's local.
