An Adam A500 entered!...nice. I worked on those in a previous life. Curious as to how many are still flying today.

For those of you who have raced, how does your flat out max speed compare with the race results?

For example, and to better illustrate my question, let?s suppose my RV-3 is capable of 193 knots true airspeed at 8,000? density altitude. My power settings at this pace are about 23.5? Mp and 2650 rpm. If I ran these power settings during an SARL race, what speed would I be showing in race results (assuming zero wind).

I?m asking because I know there are turns and I?m assuming other factors which would reduce the posted speed from the max speed an AC is capable of. I?m trying to estimate where I?d fall in the standings if I ever get to a race.

FWIW, I?m pretty sure I?d be in the RV Red class with my IO320.

Thanks in advance!

I’m averaging between 203 and 204 with my O-320 RV-4. FP Warnke Prop (68x74) spinning 2700-2800 rpm.

I'd like to take part in SARL but the the way they split up the classes by engine displacement instead of HP would mean I'd have no real chance since I have a IOX-370 with 8.3 pistons with 190 HP. I'd be in the RV Gold class competing with some real speedsters. Still, it would be fun to experience it.

I?m assuming this is in response to my question...

So what was your speed in the SARL race? I?m assuming your numbers are in MPH, not Knots?

I have done three of the SARL races, I am NOT a serious racer. Just out to have some fun, it?s a good reason to go fly. I am in the ?RV Blue? class with a 180HP, RV-8. I don?t push the plane hard at all. I just show up and fly. This race it was a bit bumpy so I pulled the power back a bit my average speed was only 170.89 MPH. The best speed I?ve had was 200.xx MPH a couple of years ago.

I don?t mess with lightning the load or shifting the CG or removing drag (lights/ antennas etc..) or taping gaps like the hard core racers.

I think Rod is asking for numbers on the same plane, max straight & level, vs race average. Something I'd like to see, as well.

Acknowledging that Aircraft do not turn on a dime and that some finite distance is travelled around a turn which is in addition to the point-to-point distance between any three points, the following table will be used to calculate the turn ?allowance? that is to be added to the total point-to-point distance of any Course:
Bank Angle
45
TAS in Kts
180
G- Radius in load Ft
1.41 2877
Turn in Degrees
45 90 120 135 360
ROT Distance traveled */sec NM
6.06 0.37 0.74 0.99 1.11 2.96
Example:
The point-to-point length of a four-turn Course is calculated in a flight-planner to be 100 NM.
The Course is shaped as a square with four 90-degree turns.
The four 90-degree turns are summed to total 360 degrees of turn.
Based on the table, 360 degrees of turn adds 2.96 NM to the Course distance*. The total Course length (to be used in scoring) is 102.96 NM**.
* The standard turn allowance uses 180 knots and 45 degrees of bank as an average of the typical range of Aircraft performance and Pilot experience
** Race Directors may interpolate table distance values as needed based on total degrees (for instance, 180 degrees is not listed, but 360 is given and can be divided by 2).

The above is used for timing.
5-6 turns
Winds etc

Most of my times were same as Vans posted speeds.
200-204 mph
130-150 mile races

Those are my race speeds in mph. The race results are all on the SARL website. I?ve only done one race this year so far as Texas is a few hours too far from Michigan but I will be doing AVC (hopefully). I don?t have any straight and level speeds recorded, but I can do that this weekend and report back.
