Mountain wave push to 268 KGS

This is a lousy picture, sorry. It was taken 144 miles west of ABQ. I was riding a mountain wave at 17,500. The back side of the wave had me slowed to 220 KGS and it was difficult to maintain altitude. I descended to 15,500 and got a much better ride.

Back in 2009 (Cayman Islands trip), Tuppergal and I departed Lee C. Fine (AIZ) near central Missouri for Cross City (CTY), Florida with a planned fuel stop at Chilton County (02A), Alabama. Winds were so favorable that we continued non-stop landing CTY (~691nm) in 3hr 45min. Rarely saw the ground speed dip below 200kts; That was cool! :D Rosie

202 kts at 7.3 gph

Two weeks ago while over West Virginia we got 55 kts tailwind pushing us east. At 67% power and burning 7.3 gph we were making 202 kts ground speed.
202kt2011.jpg

Pull the power back to 50%, the fuel burn was 5.2 gph. Now we only get 182 kts ground speed.

APRS track of my RV-9A at 17,500 ft over the San Juans. Not quite 200 kts, but fuel burn was 5.6 GPH. Colder than *&#@@ and the back of my neck was freezing. 39.6 MPG , I'll take that any day!

Love APRS, and works great with a bent whip in the wingtip. Hadn't changed the call sign from my Mooney to the RV-9A.

I unfortunately don't have the picture to prove it, but Flight Aware has it on record since I had flight following. From St. Louis to RDU on New Year's Eve 2008--238kts over the Appalachains. Froze my butt off, but it was worth it :)

Previously I posted a 203kt pic taken during phase 1 testing. But didn't want Vlad's 204kts from O-320 power to 1-up me, so:

Coming home from Great Northwest Air Race III. I think I was at 11500 burning 8.4gph trying to beat the sunset. made with minutes to spare.

I saw 232kts straight and level during the Hill Country Race. I was at 5500', 2600rpm WOT and 13+gph 190kts TAS and getting a good push approaching turn 1....the downside was after the turn right into the teeth of the wind. TAS was 205kts in a slow descent and ground speed went to 160. :(

Finally made it ... just because !

My lowly 150hp O320 with a fixed pitch does not have a lot of "ponies to spare" but it if frugal. So, what is a guy to do when it looks pretty calm on the ground but the winds will make any $100 lunch run less than idea ? Well, go out and join the 200Kts club of course.

So, with no other mission in mind, I flew off down low for about 30 miles and then climbed high for a fast run back :D

I'm still working on it

This is interesting, probably could be worked up into some semi-official status symbol.

Me too, me too, me too!! :D:D

Photoshop. Radio looks too clean. Do you have other devices to support your claim? :D

HA HA HA Vlad! :D

Your accusation would have more weight IF I even knew HOW to use photoshop! :D I can CAD 'till the cows come home, but photo editing is not in my box of tools :)

KLN 94

Hi Billgill

I was looking at your pictures and noticed you had a KLN-94 as your GPS....

How do you like it for ease of operation, approaches and all ??

That is an option I'm thinking about since a 430W is not in the cards just yet..

Thanks for your imputs

Gotta love this

Bet most of you have seen better..Coming back from San Jose to San Diego yesterday had a 34kt tailwind. Ground speed over 200kts!!! Of course I put money in the bank going up with a 18kt headwind but that was soon forgotten..

Happy Flying.

Down low in Alabama yesterday, trying out my latest experiment.....203 TAS, WOT in level flight, on autopilot. No, I won't claim precise calibration, but it's close. I'll be doing NTPS 3-leg runs in the near future. Sorry about the blurry shot. It was a bit bumpy into a 30 knot headwind. Probably go a little faster when I find some smooth air ;)

(Postscript, two weeks later; Did a 3-leg at 9500 feet while indicating 185 TAS. The numbers were 194/45, 179/169, and 182/292. That calculates at 184.9 knots. Pretty accurate. I'll bet the 203 in the photo is equally accurate.....or at least over 200.)

104% power..? How did you manage that DanH

The Lycoming power chart for the 390 assumes 28.0" Hg at rated power. The GRT Sport percent power indication is based on the OEM power chart. In this case I have 28.6".....through a filter.

Dan - I was feeling REALLY SLOW until I calculated your fuel burn

Yeah....book is 105 lbs per hour minimum fuel flow for 210 HP, or 17.5 GPH. As I do not own an oil well, full tilt boogie down low is reserved for special occasions ;)

212 Kts RV10

This was heading to Osh 2011. It was one of those days that no matter how far you pulled the power back, you were going to be early for customs.:D We left Williston, ND direct for Osh, 675 NM. Notice 38.3 Gal remaining at Osh so we still had lots of Safety for a hold if it happened. I have the HWA tip tanks. The two legs was just over 1100 NM total and we got in to Osh just after lunch.:) For the keen eyes, the AOA was not correct.

Here you will see the great economy after we leaned a bit more. Not running LOP as I do not find you can without big speed penalty in the teens and up. We lost a bit of speed but still had over 200kts at 23plus miles/gal.:D

Having trouble finding the photo, but I've got one showing a 205kt level GS on my 496.... IN MY CHEROKEE 140 :D

On the way home from Memphis in November. i wasn't leaned out yet, so the fuel flow is still high.

From KGTF TO KDBQ IN 2 hours 43 minutes at 17500 ft. 926nm. In my RV7. Average ground speed 342kts. The jet stream dipped down low that day.

Short story: On a trip to Houston from SW Colorado I had a 221 Kt ground speed the entire trip. I could actually see the ground moving beneath me!!! Called a buddy to brag and he reminded me that the Wind Gods keep track of that sort of thing. He was right because on the way home over the mountains I was only making a little over 100 Kts. Lesson...enjoy the tailwinds, but keep it to yourself!

Okay, Not in an RV, but still smoking fast! This was a couple of weeks ago. 647 Knots or 744 mph. 187 kts tail wind.

208 level 228 in the Descent

Nice kicker the other day going to KCUB. 208 level flight at 7.4 gph.

8427773511_4b70082a9b_b.jpg

In the descent saw 230 but by the time I got the camera back out it was all the way down to 228 kts.

Well these are from the past when I had a turbo Sube. It had problems and I have been NA for the last 200 hrs or so. The ground speed is not that great, in fact I think I had some head wind, but the true air speed, RPMs, and MAP are a bit unusual... 48 square on 150 cubic inches and broke the speed limit straight and level at 8K.

I have learned much since making this mistake. I understand that VNE is based on true airspeed and 200 knots is my limit. Just thought I would post the pics to show what happened one day when my hair was on fire.
