.5 MACH TAS

Well, Bruce Bohannon claims 283KTAS at 40,000 -70F in the Flyin’ Tiger. I recall the .5 number but the 284KTAS seems slow? Can anyone confirm the number at that altitude and temperature?

If'n I'm using the calculators correctly, -70F is very close to ISA, and for a TAS of 283 knots, his IAS (maybe CAS) would have been 140knots. And with that TAS, in those conditions, his mach would be .493.

What kinda plane was he in? What motor?

That plane was built in my shop. That part of the story is not well known. It was a genuine back-of-the-napkin design. It sure didn’t use much runway - no matter which engine was in it.

Willie Lansing in San Marcos did the paint. Imagine how he got that part right!

That airplane inspired me to get into experimental aviation, always seeing it parked in front of the Reno Hilton every year when the company I was working for would go to the air races in my younger years. I remember well watching Pushy Galore on the course. Lots of good memories out in that desert.

Get a F1 Rocket everyday is 200 Kts!!

The first Vans machine I ever flew was an F1, I was looking to buy either an 8, 4 or Rocket. Ended up with Vans best design, the 8, proper U-/C of course:) the F1 was quick but the FF was too high for little gain over the 8. The 4 looked good but too limiting/cramped. 180 TAS is pretty good:(
 
As we get our F1 dialed in with the new engine we are seeing great results. Today with a 62 degree F temp I went from brake release to 10,000 AGL in exactly 4 minutes. I was however light on fuel at 23 gallons. Cruise speeds have been excellent but really high speeds require fuel flow as the picture shows. We can however get the FF below 11 GPH and still do around 200kts true. I am surprised there are not more rockets flying. Hopefully team Rocket can resurrect the airframe and see more new starts!

Ram air temperature rise

Literally off the back of an envelope:
at 200 mph, pressure rise ~5%, temp rise ~1.3% or
~7 degrees F.
I don't know what venturi effect is with an air scoop.

200 mph = 293 ft/s
c=1100 ft/s
M=293/1100 = 0.266

T/To = 0.986

60F=520R
To = 520/0.986 = 527R = 67F

Your math is correct sir!
Our OAT probes read a recovery temperature that is roughly 75--80% of full ram rise. So a properly places OAT will read about 5F above ambient static temp.
