Starter oil leak

dothetime

Well Known Member
I have a TCM 655551 starter, it’s a geared lightweight starter on a continental O-200 A82
It’s leaking oil out of a weep hole on the bottom.
There are no parts diagrams, and TCM doesn’t support it.
It looks like a knockoff of a B&C
I’m pretty sure it’s an oil seal at the front gear that needs to be replaced.
Any one have any experience with these starters and can suggest a place to obtain a seal?
I’ve called starter rebuilders, TCM, and B&C, no luck.
I know I can buy a new starter for $600, but it seems like a bad solution to a
$10.00 seal.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Carefully pull the seal to avoid damaging the number on the seal. Take it to your local bearing shop and they can find a replacement for you.

I have replaced that seal a few times. It was part of the overhaul gasket kit for the C90/O-200.

I think in the past I had purchased it from Aero Tech of Louisville, who is a rebuilder of starters and generators, among other electrical devices.

Starter seal

Replaced the starter, took the old one apart
It appears that the pinion gear shaft has a o-ring under the gear that seals the shaft when in the off position, non engaged position.
I don?t see any other seals, only the shaft bearings.
Could this be the only seal that keeps the oil out of the starter?
The o-ring looks good.
