ECI EXP cylinder baffles

Almost...

I looked at the revised drawings once again. I believe #1 is still backward (it did not get changed). If you build it the way it's printed, the taper is not in the correct orientation. #2 and #3 now look correct to me. #4 remains and has always been the correct orientation.

I'm visualizing this in my mind until I can get back out to the plane. Above sounds correct?

It could be, I flipped 2 & 3 but didn't touch the rest without looking at my engine. Once you fit them, let me know and I can change it around easy enough.

I don't think it really matters, as long as you bend the tabs in the correct direction. The patterns were not set up to bend the tabs "up", which is why it says to bend them "away" from the cylinder. Once you fit them, you should be able to see what needs to happen.

Either way, let me know.

Russ, thanks for your contributions and help on this, too.

Yes, this is Russ's work. All I did was take his templates and render them with my electronic crayon.

He was kind enough to send me his cardboard templates three years ago and I can't express how helpful that was!

Thanks again!

Another question please

Hi Russ,
On post 47,Randy describes and shows a double bend on cylinder 4, much like 3. The recent plans only show this double bend on 3. Did something change? I believe there is another post by you (#61) that shows number 4 without the double bend and is primered green.

Thanks.....

Reporting Back

Hey everyone,
I had a chance to work with the latest baffle templates last night, then went ahead and started with Cylinder 2:

Made the cut near the relief holes of the existing part:

Cylinder before with large gap:
https://postimg.cc/7GHFqB00

Cylinder after with space filled. Just need a little RTV work to finish it off:

Position set with clecos:

I now have baffles that follow the taper of the cylinder as they wrap. I decided to not drill the offset pattern of holes as indicated on the template for the upper portion. This allowed me to tweak positioning and match drill the common holes to other parts. I then added a few more holes in between. The bottom flange for the safety wire was interfering with an aluminum line below. The lower flanges on these modified parts are larger than stock. Easy enough to change or trim to fit.

Overall, I think these are going to work very well. Again, my thanks to all invloved.

Sean, did you figure out the question on cylinder 4? I could locate my baffle and check how it ended up.

Regards,
Russ

Not yet, Russ. I'll look at it more and let you know. That extra bend may not be necessary with the surrounding parts in play.

Installed cylinder 1 baffle using latest template. All is well! Moving on to number 3.

ECI Tapered Cylinder 4

Confirming Cylinder 4 template produced a nice part. No fit issues, wraps nicely on tapered cylinder. It seems to me the double bend (like #3) that was indicated years ago, and no longer indicated on the latest templates, is not necessary. The air is forced down the modified baffle in this area and is trapped by surrounding structure. There is a small area around a bolt head that needs plugged, but all good otherwise.

I'm down to Cylinder 3. My double bend looks pretty good, but it must not taper quite enough. When placing this against the cylinder, the double bend forces the mounting hole tab away too much. I may have to try this again. Not sure how to get that taper smaller, as it was a challenge to get what I have.

Thanks!

My thanks go out to the creators of the tapered cylinder baffle templates! I just finished the install and can only imagine how much work they saved. They look like stock

I added stiffeners where the added tapered baffles attached to the original baffle, some extra strength and hopefully life!

This forum is a great resource with some lifesaving information

Cheers
