Well Known Member
While at Osh in the Innovation Pavilion, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Rutler and Jessica Stephens from Aithre, a Tech company that specialise in monitoring your health in flight.

https://aithreaviation.com/

What was of interest to me was their new remote mounted CO Detector with a solid state fuel cell and a 10 year life with no calibration required !

It is a small device that you can use to monitor the CO levels in the cabin on your Dynon /G3x etc or your iPhone with the new app.

Installation is very simple with only 3 wires . You can download the app on your phone or contact Dynon etc for their widget so you can remote monitor the CO levels with your Dynon Alarms etc.

The resulting 3 ppm you can see is after the local flight school taxied paste my hangar in their 182 at the normal student full rich setting !

In climb the highest I have seen is 17 ppm with a quartering tailwind and once in cruise the reading drops to zero.
( I don't fully understand how the tailwind made a difference but climbing into a straight on headwind, the result is less than 5 ppm. )

If you had the app downloaded on your iPhone it records the trends so you can review after the flight.

I ordered one to put in a few weeks ago. What sold me were there YouTube vids. Vids were a little lacking in production quality but it was interesting to see how the traditional dots didn't respond to pretty high exposure.

Lynn

Thanks for the info, I am very interested to see what it would take to connected to the G3X. I will see if I can get any info from their website which last time I visited, did not have much info.

I just installed the same unit in my G3X equipped RV7 for evaluation before I start offering it to customers. It's something I've been meaning to do anyway. So far so good and easy to install to the G3X which they have documented in the manual.

I placed an order today. Communication was great with a very fast and friendly response to questions. Looking forward to install it.

Yeah, prior to watching them it was a little harder to justify the price tag, but afterwards not so hard of a sale. I also had sent them some questions and they were quick to respond. Specifically what happens after 10 years and they said it only had a 10 year rating because that was how far out it could test, so it could go longer without needing to be recalibrated or replaced.

Hey Lynn,

Thanks for the heads up on the video, I did not know there was one.

Jessica does a great job of showing how good their sensor is and how bad the old DOT Cards are.

Well done Jim, it would be great to see other USA Vendors do the same at Airshows here in Australia

Knowing Jim personally, he has put a lot of time and energy into this product. And in a sector that has woefully needed an updating.

Have one of the remote detectors installed in my RV-9A with Dynon Skyview.

If you ever get to talk to Jim in person, you'll quickly realize that it's more than just a product. He, and his team, want to truly educated pilots on the dangers of CO and just how blind we are to it using older technology.

HIGHLY recommend everyone take a look at Aithre.

Aithre App

I have been very happy with the CO Detector from Aithre and for a 2 hour flight on Friday I thought I would download their app that records up to 4hrs of trends.

The flight was to include 2 x practice Rnav's and with the A/C on and external vents closed for the whole flight , you can see that I am getting elevated CO readings in climb.

I have the standard corrugated rear bulkhead that is not sealed around the corrugations so I plan to seal those up to see If it makes any difference.

The app syncs up with the CO Detector automatically as long as your Blue Tooth is on.

Zoomed in on one of the missed approaches....

It was a very hot day and the A/C was very welcome however having a peak of over 22 PPM CO in climb will have to be investigated !

I'll report back when I get a chance to seal up the bulkhead to see if it has made a difference, the air may be coming up through the tunnel ?

I am installing Aithre 3 detectors in several aircraft and a few available for a good price.
Email me if you're interested.

Easy install

I just installed one of these in my plane yesterday. Per the instructions, it was just a matter of adding 3 new pins into one of the GEA 24 connectors and then doing a few simple configuration steps on the G3X.

However, when I first tested it, the unit didn't power up. When I checked my connections, I found the Ground from the Aithre going to "Lo" on the GEA 24 was not really a good ground. At Walt's suggestion, I spliced in a direct airframe ground wire in addition to the wire going to the GEA 24 Lo. Adding the direct ground solved the problem and the Aithre came to life on the second try.

I'm looking testing it in flight.

I've installed one in my RV7 and connected it to the Skyview. Installation and configuring went pretty well. It is so small, I just zip tied it in place. I am usually seeing 1 ppm in flight. I saw 3 ppm during a taxi run up once. I have the wing push rod boots installed and foam insulated the rear bulkhead stiffener openings for cold drafts reasons. I think that helps from drawing in any CO vapors. In flight I see no difference with the heater on or off. I had tested it in place with smoke and the readings increase, then decrease when I remove the smoke. That tells me it is working. I'm real happy with the Aithre Shield and feel more comfortable about flying and our health.

Anybody have any contact info for Aithre? Nothing on their website. I'm looking to find out whether the data from the apps are downloadable.

Thanks,
Greg

Thanks, Walt. I finally did find a phone number and called them, ordered both an oximeter and CO detector.

For the record, they are just about to release an app version that allows downloading the data to an excel file.

Cheers,
Greg

CO Poisoning is very real !!

Sad story that happened in Australia with the loss of a DHC Beaver,
Report here:

https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2017/aair/ao-2017-118/

Please consider installing a modern CO detector linked to the alarms on your EFIS !

It?s been over a year since I installed the CO detector and I have enjoyed the challenge of finding all the different places the CO can enter the cabin.

My aircraft has A/C and with the external vents closed i was still getting elevated CO levels in some flight conditions ( mainly extended climb at full power ).
( Max reading of only 20ppm)

My firewall and penetrations are well sealed so my thoughts were the corrugated baggage bulk head was the obvious entry point. I sealed up the bulk head and I am still finding elevated CO during climb.

I am still looking but if it was not for my Aithre Monitor linked to my EFIS, I would never even of known !

I have been doing the same thing - looking for CO ingress leaks. Only occurs when rich of peak (makes sense) but occurs in level flight as well as descending. Firewall recently checked and any questionable spots resealed, no joy. Taped the cowl edges and NACA vents, no joy. Next step is looking at wing roots. Levels are not high (less than 20 ppm) but enough to warrant figuring this out.

I have sealed the wingroots also with no joy. I suspect it is coming from the tail portion by the low pressure in the fuse but it is hard to seal that portion off.

Aithre Shield EX 3.0 Approved for all Van's RV-12 Aircraft

Just an FYI, Van's issued SL-00010 on May 5, 2020 authorizing the installation of the Aithre Shield EX 3.0 system in all RV-12 and RV-12iS aircraft.

See the SL for kit numbers and installation instructions.

I have their older model in my RV7 and am very happy with it too. So much better info than the stickers or battery powered portable units. I also see levels in the teens during climb and zero during cruise. I?d be curious if anyone has a root cause of the CO leak path during climb.

The cO monitor also caught a significant leak via my smoke smoke system during phase 1 testing so it paid for itself.

I've seen lots of panels that have a "CO Test" switch.

It appears the Aithre 2.0 performs a self test at start-up.

Is that correct? No panel test switch required with the Aithre Shield 2.0?

Mine reads max at power up for a minute I think then settles to zero. That is the test from what I recall. The max is 255 or so

Yes self test on power up, been using the Aithre III now for about 4 yrs with no issues. It’s what I install with the G3X panels.
