Icom IC-A200 Molex connector, pin, extractor

charosenz

Well Known Member
If anyone knows the part number of the molex fitting (and pins) that is used in the back of the Icom IC-A200. Ideally where I can order one and the pins, like Mouser I would appreciate knowing those details.

Alternatively, I would be curious if anyone has developed a skill to remove the pins from that connector and if so, what tool you used.

Thanks.

The pin is a Molex 08-05-0302. (see Aeroelectric Connection reference pages and A200 wiring diagrams)
You can search on that, but it is an obsolete part.
The extraction tool is just a thin piece of metal to slide under the contact from the front and lift the tang. I suspect you have some thin metal laying around...

Mike,

Perfect that is just what I needed to know. That Bob Nuckols is amazing. Thanks for the link.

I have 15 of them but not the tool. How many would you need?

Danny,

That is super nice of you!

I would be happy to buy them all from you. Ill PM you. As far as the situation I won't know for sure how many really need to be replaced until I extract them. I built them over a decade ago, and then had to take time off the project before it was ever completed. Now that I am back on it, I don't like the looks of the crimps that I can see. They are probably functional but I used a poor quality crimper back then and if I could replace them I will.

There a new connector that will retrofit?

Does anyone know if there a newer molex connetor that will fit the IC-A200 tray that takes more current production pins?

( Ill try to get Icom and email too)

Charlie

I made a pin extractor tool out of a paper clip:
Unfold one end of the clip and place this wire leg on a flat steel surface. Then hit this wire leg with a hammer to flatten it.
Then use this flattened end to release the tab on the contact.

Mike is correct, and the Aeroelectic reference is informative, but not helpful in sourcing connector pins.

I *think* these are what you need ...

I purchased something very similar last year from a different seller that worked perfectly for my Icom A210, which uses the same shell and pins as the A200 as far as I know.

Please do your own confirming due diligence.

I also fabricated a simple extraction tool from a scrap of flat steel. Easily within your abilities :)

Hope this helps,
Peter

Icom has an alternate tray backplate that can be used with a A210 and or A220. My understanding is that both com are offered with either the molex card edge conn or the 25pin sub d. I know a A200 will plug and play into my A210 tray.
Maybe that p/n backplate would be a possible change over for more updated plug and parts.

I see Spruce sells the housing/connector for the A210. Interestingly enough I see it has solder lugs on it.

I also know that ICOM has some tech info on the differences on the A200 and A210.

I sent and email in to ICOM but they have not replied.

I am sure something will work out.

Yes, I saw that option as well but didn?t care for the required solder lugs. That was my fallback position, but since I had the Molex housing, and was able to find pins I went that route.

I didn?t look extensively for the Molex housing, but I understand it is also obsolete and difficult to find.

Icom does offer a D-sub backplate (at least for the A210) but its pin configuration is more limited than the original Molex (and it?s expensive, ~$125 I believe). If you have the installation manual (available on-line) you?ll find descriptions and part numbers for that backplate there.

a200 wiring header

Just to wrap this up, I did get a reply from ICOM. Yes, (as some have shared) the A210 header will work and you can get them directly from ICOM or from Spruce.

Thanks all,

Charlie

Thanks for the tip on pins at Steinair. They are a great source.

If that would fall through, I found these too. I ordered some more out of curiousity to see if they were a real match. I believe they are. and 10 for $3 is a good deal.

Molex pin remover

The pin remover can be easily made from any old piece of steel and a file.

Get some large bobby pins at a Chinamart store somewhere and fashion your own pin extractor.

Here is all you need to know and more:

I used the gold plated split pins off ebay. They were excellent pins.
Most important is the crimping tool for the Molex. Get a good one.

Thanks for sharing. The extractor pin removal topic has resulted in several good ideas.

Just a FYI, the split pin part numbers referernce in the article in the link are no longer available at Mouser. But they are available still as previously mentioned in this thread.
