RV-10 Beginnings

Well Known Member
So a few weeks back I took the plunge and bought a partially completed RV-10 empennage kit from a fine member of VAF (thanks, UnPossible!)

This all was a bit ahead of my schedule (I didn't expect to be starting for at least 8 more months), but the deal too good to pass up, IMHO. So now, I have a partial kit, some tools (also courtesy of VAF Classifieds) on the way, and a big project (workshop construction) looking me in the face.

I'll be maintaining a build log at the following address, if anyone wants to stop by and check it out: http://www.brunbergs.net/?cat=14

Barn

Congratulations Dave.
Looks like a nice shop.
I say, build it. When it's done, you'll find a way to get it out.

That's a nice barn to storm. Rich. Where is the fridge and the beer? :D

See the little room above the extension on the left? The fridge (and the fermenter) are in there. If you ever make it out to KBVI, the barn is about an 8 minute drive from the ramp. Let me know if you're in the area. *we need a "beer" smiley*

Nice! I will be there at Air Heritage on my December Museum tour :)

Yeah, sometimes circumstances push your schedule up. I hadn't planned on building for a year or two, but came across a deal I couldn't pass up. So here we are! Build on!

OK, this is more workshop related, but it is a milestone. I managed over the last week to get my machine tools moved in and set up. While they aren't strictly necessary for the RV-10 build, not having them available has been eating at me, and once I get started on the wings, I expect to have very little time to spare for workshop setup. So I decided to get this done now. If I need to make some machined or sheet metal parts, I have the capability now.

Just ordered the wing kit today! Clock is ticking on putting the finishing touches on the empennage kit, and I'm getting excited!

First Wing Work

1.75 hrs on setting up the left wing spar, final drilling, deburring, etc. Much of the time was spent worrying and making sure I actually had the LEFT wing spar and not the RIGHT one before reaming the holes out. Yeah, silly, but that's not exactly a cheap mistake to fix if I misidentified it and got it upside down.

If you haven't already, make contact with one of the local EAA chapters. Chapter 68 meets over here at KBVI (generally), and Chapter 857 is over at BTP. Send me a PM for contact info.

I've been doing time lapse videos of almost all of my work to document the build process, but I was getting a little bored with the normal stuff, camera in one place, with me hunched over the work or looking dumb reading the manual. So I tried something new with this last one. The new angles start around 1:30.

Fuselage kit!

I received my fuselage kit yesterday and have been working my way through the inventory sheets...Now I just have to finish up these wings.

I completed the fuselage kit inventory today. Just a few discrepancies to correct. E-mail sent to Van's, and I'll be on my way!

I decided to use the Cee Bailey's windscreen and windows, so I deleted those from the kit. Also, I deleted the Van's aluminum heater boxes because I intend to use the stainless heater boxes.

I am very excited to begin the fuselage construction phase, but I still have some work on the wings to complete before I can really dive in! I have been making slow but steady progress on the wings, but I hope (and think) I can really accelerate things soon.

Progress on wings! I have been putting lots of work on small tedious jobs, and today managed to start putting big stuff together--building the major subassemblies out of parts that I have been knocking out for months.

It feels great to finally have some pieces that look like parts of an airplane, and not just random bits of aluminum!
