You can leave it off and it will make things easier, however, remember that whatever you decide to mount in the space between the firewall and sub panel will be essentially inaccessible in the end....

Did you let the VHB tape fully cure prior to riveting? They use that tape to secure panels on skyscrapers, so properly applied and cured, it should have plenty of bond strength.

Remember that it is about time in the air for fuel planning; not distance. If you have 4 hours of fuel on board, at the end of four hours you WILL be landing, regardless of the distance...
