A number of norcal & socal RV types will be camping overnight and having a little BBQ at a very pretty/low hassle informal fly-in. So far it sounds like at least six planes, but we have room for more. Details follow...
Oceano (
http://www.airnav.com/airport/L52) May 6th/7th (rain date May 13th/14th - if we are rescheduling due to rain we'll send out an email on the Norcal/socal lists/VAF site the morning of Friday May 5th)
* Arrive any time Saturday.
* If you wanna have lunch with the gang (perhaps just doing a day?), let's say a Saturday 1PM lunch at a local resturant (we'll leave a sign at the campsite).
* Pot-luck BBQ dinner/drinking/laughing by our tents in the evening.
* Leave when you feel like it on Sunday
Why Oceano?
* Posh campsite next to the planes - with hot water shower & BBQ grills
* Very short walk to a nice beach - perfect for away time with your SO
* Decent nearby restaurants for food during the day
* Fuel available (not the best price, but consider buying some to support our kind hosts ;-))
* The low stratus that can cover this airport doesn't generally (knock on wood) start rolling in until the end of May (The airport mgr concurs with this guess)
* I've heard ATVs are available for rent nearby (still trying to find details - not my cup 'o tea but great fun for some)
* If you think you ain't the camping type, come anyway! This is a very posh campsite (hot showers!) - if you need a tent or sleeping bags just send out a note, I bet someone can cover ya. There are also hotels nearby.
* Leland sez: One of the neat things at Oceano is hiking through the sand dunes. You can walk miles of dunes and not see anybody. Lots of wild animal tracksthough.
* Horseback riding is available across the stream next to the airport. If you sign a liability release saying you are an experienced rider, you can do a trail ride on a frisky horse and gallop on the beach. Lots of fun but scary.
* The Oceano Melodrama will be doing "The One for the Mojave Kid" in May, with two Saturday showtimes:

Flying into Oceano:
* I talked with the guy who runs the place - he really digs this idea. I told him I'd give him a heads up a couple of days before the fly-in so he knows approximately how many planes to expect.
* Oceano is _VERY_ noise sensitive. Calm wind runway is 29 and a full downwind is preferred. Use your judgment, but please consider throttling back well before you get to the airport (especially if your RV 'pops' like mine when I'm too quick with the power decrease ;-))
* If you have a spare seat and want to fill it - send out a note to the list - I'll bet some local person who's still building would love to come.
What to bring (if you don't have tent/sleeping bag - ask the list for a loner):
* Tent
* Sleeping bag (and an air mat is recommended)
* A couple of us should bring of bag of briquettes and something to set the a fire with
* Food and fluids to share (please take a look at what others are bringing via the evite)
If you think you might attend this gathering - please use the following evite to list your response:
eVite to get rough attendance plans
(I know some are probably not keen on yet another automated tool, but please go through the hassle of creating an evite account if you don't have one. Its _way_ better than email for keeping a rough count of folks coming and any pot-lucky BBQ goodness they may be bringing)
This is a low key event, even if you haven't used the evite and the 6th rolls around - fly up and meet us. I gather there is an airshow earlier in the day in SoCal - after the show, come up and slack by a campfire.
