I was not aware that Canadian amateur-built aircraft need a special flight authorization from the FAA to operate in the US. Are people actually getting these? It says in one place that they normally don't expire and in another place that they're issued for a maximum 180 days.

Just print and carry the PDF document that you linked to. I leave a copy in my aircraft permanently. It's good forever.

You previously had to apply for an SFA which was good for 180 days. That is no longer the case.

And you also need a radio station licence...
