I know there is Bonderite C-IC 33 Aero (Formerly Alumiprep 33) at $45 qrt. You can look up C-C( 33 Aero ingrediencies. I believe it is more environmentally friendly than acids used in the original.

HOW ABOUT MAKING YOUR OWN.... Does any one have a good alum prep cleaner / mild etch Recipe

Some use HCI, Hydrochloric Acid Cleaner or also known as muriatic acid. Easy to buy local over the counter. The strength not sure.

Also some use hydrogen peroxide, 3% mixed with water 10:1.

I believe Alumiprep is actually just phosphoric acid, and from what I remember, hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acids are a no-no (in that order) on aluminum. I'm in the shop so will not check reference materials until late tonight.

Thanks for the info. So phosphoric acid at 10-30% with water sounds like a good solution.

I looked up both of the main active ingrediencies and you can make it for about 1/3 the cost. The Orthophosphoric/Phosphoric is real cheap so it gets even cheaper. Some swear by Bon Ami, I believe has citric acid, very mild and non toxic. I think with scotch brite, using a little cleaner of some kind, rinse, dry wipe with solvent it will be OK for primer.

bonderite c-ic 33
Orthophosphoric acid 7664-38-2 10- 30 %
2-Butoxyethanol 111-76-2 10- 30 %
Potassium fluoride 7789-23-3 < 3 %
Octylphenol ethoxylate, 9-10EO 9036-19-5 < 1 %
Remainder not hazardous including water~ 60- 100 %

AlumiPrep 33
Phosphoric acid 10 - 30 %
2-Butoxyethanol 10 - 30 %
Alkylphenol ethoxylate 1 - 5 %
Potassium dihydrogenorthophosphate 1 - 5 %
Hydrogen fluoride 0.1 - 1 %
